The African golden cat is only found in the equatorial rainforests of Africa, an area the size of Alaska, Texas, California, Montana and New Mexico combined. Here, bushmeat hunting, habitat conversion and other human threats are widespread threatening the longterm survival of the African golden cats. The hunter-killer traps used—akin to warfare land mines— injure or kill all wildlife that steps in them, both target (e.g., forest antelopes and bushpigs) and non-target species and the lesser-known African golden cats. For example, in 2019 alone, an estimated 80 AGGs perished in snares in three protected forest areas, 71 of which were unintentionally caught and killed in what we termed “collateral damage of indiscriminate bushmeat hunting.” Despite, these threats, the African golden cat remains Africa’s least known, least studied wild cat species.
